It has been well established that diet\u00a0and physical fitness are strongly linked.\u00a0However, high levels of physical activity can\u2019t make up for a poor diet,\u00a0any more than healthy eating can remove the need for physical activity. In fact,\u00a0researchers have consistently <a href=\"http:\/\/diabetes.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/early\/2018\/02\/22\/db17-1293\">reported\u00a0<\/a>that exercise alone is not likely to effectively reduce weight \u2013 a change in eating patterns is required.<\/p>\n<p>Unhealthy eating is a known risk factor for many leading causes of disease,\u00a0including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers. The ACSM American Fitness Index\u00a0(Fitness Index) includes the percent of residents who report eating the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables as two measures of a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2017\/p1116-fruit-vegetable-consumption.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4720 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/americanfitnessindex.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/CDC-Adult-FV-Consumption_FINAL-20180417.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"907\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acsmsoftware.com\/afitesttest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/CDC-Adult-FV-Consumption_FINAL-20180417.png 907w, https:\/\/acsmsoftware.com\/afitesttest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/CDC-Adult-FV-Consumption_FINAL-20180417-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/acsmsoftware.com\/afitesttest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/CDC-Adult-FV-Consumption_FINAL-20180417-768x193.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Depending on a person\u2019s age and sex,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2017\/p1116-fruit-vegetable-consumption.html\">federal guidelines\u00a0<\/a>recommend that adults\u00a0eat\u00a0at least\u00a0one and a half\u00a0to two cups per day of\u00a0fruit,\u00a0and two to three cups per day of\u00a0vegetables\u00a0as part of a healthy\u00a0eating\u00a0pattern. A good diet provides the needed nutrients for strong bones and muscles that enable us to be physically active.\u00a0For good health and to support fitness, focusing on improving access to and consumption of fruits and vegetables would be a\u00a0great strategy for communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>How many fruits and vegetables are people in your city eating?
